I Could Be Illegal

These t-shirts were made in response to the passing of a new bill in Arizona (SB1070) that allows:

"state officials to inquire into the immigration status of any person based upon "reasonable suspicion":
For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or agency of this state or a county, city, town or other political subdivision of this state where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person.
The back of the t-shirt says:
"A threat to anyone's rights is a threat to everyone's rights"

The Bird and I (Collage, 2010)

This piece began with a series of painted envelope scraps glued to a large piece of paper. I knew I wanted to make something, but I didn't know exactly what, nor did I feel like thinking too hard, so I just began to create. Little by little, pieces fell into place; or, rather, I begin to make sense out of them. I found a strand of possible direction and followed it for a while, knowing that I could keep adding and adding and nothing is ever finished, not even a piece of art. Like life, it is overwhelming and scary at times, but beautiful in all its possibilities as well.
